RVTT Partnership with FOMAWA
Many schools in Kenya have significant areas of unused outdoor space. The RVTT has teamed up with a local NGO Friends of the Mau Watershed (FOMAWA), in a plan to plant trees in schools. Children will be involved in looking after the trees, and learning about the conservation and protection of the environment. The first school to participate in this program is the Sikoro Primary School. This school was started in 1962 to educate the children of local saw mill employees. Please read here a letter from Sikoro expressing the difference the scheme has made to the school. Today, most of the forest is cleared, the saw mills no longer operate, and unemployment is very high. Sikoro Primary School only utilises 4 acres of the 30 acre site which it owns. The RVTT and FORMAWA plan to fund the planting up of a commercial woodlot, and an area of indigenous trees. Many Children in this area suffer from waterborne diseases, which emanate from a lack of clean water. The RVTT is also planning to fund the provision of water tanks to collect water off the school roofs. This will provide safe drinking water and water for a tree nursery. We have identified many other schools who would like to participate in this project. What we lack are funds - any donation, however small, will be wisely spent.
